Great year for trails, but tough financially - MRR needs your Giving Tuesday support!

After funding paid trail crews the last several summers, the Valley network has never been more fun or in better shape. You (hopefully!) rode the results every week. From the downhill lines on Lil’ Stumpin and Swell, major enhancements to Busternut, Ev and Rev to the new rock work on The Ridge, investing in professional trail building and maintenance clearly pays off in a network that is fun, challenging, expanding and generally free from washouts, trees or other stoke-sapping issues.

While we are proud of our progress in the woods this year, 2025 highlighted the unpredictable nature of the fundraising we’ve traditionally relied upon.
  • Our biggest events, Cranko de Mayo (wet weather) and Grateful Gravel (concert ticket sales shortfall) raised 77% less than last year.
  • Like many VMBA chapters, our membership has declined since COVID-era peaks, down 33%.
  • $12,000 of past donations are in limbo due to a class-action lawsuit against the charitable platform we previously used*. While we are actively pursuing legal action to recover our money, we don’t know if or when we will be successful.

Our goal is to establish a more sustainable financial foundation for our operations by increasing the number of committed recurring donations. The certainty of recurring donations matches the economics of funding a professional trail building and maintenance program - to budget for the entire year, hire our crew early, and purchase materials before the season starts.

Every single dollar we raise goes to trail work and youth programming. Mad River Riders are a fully volunteer run organization, with no paid staff. We guarantee that more than 90% of your donation goes directly to the trail crew — their tools, materials, and labor. The remainder of funds pay coaches for our summer youth programming, to develop our Valley’s future riders and stewards.

This Giving Tuesday, our goal is to sign up 50 new monthly donors.
  • $10/month pays for hand tools
  • $25/month secures one hour of crew time
  • $50/month funds an hour of advice and support from a professional trail builder
  • $100/month over 12 months funds a full week of a trail crew member

We hope you can take action to build this more sustainable model and guarantee we can continue investing in trail building and maintenance.

With gratitude,
The Mad River Riders

* Our former payment platform, Flipcause, stopped remitting funds to us and other non-profits using their platform (news story here), due, they claim, to payment portal technical challenges. This has significantly impacted our organization’s cash flow. The CA Attorney General has ordered a cease & desist order and Flipcause is facing a class action lawsuit. We have switched recurring and other donations to a new platform to avoid any further revenue loss.
